The discovery of natural mineral water by the British scientist, William Gowland, has its origins in MITSUYA CIDER.

1884

MITSUYA

Carbonated water is bottled and sold as Hirano-sui.

1889

WILKINSON

John Clifford Wilkinson discovers mineral water at Takarazuka in Hyogo Prefecture.

1890

WILKINSON

Natural carbonated mineral water is produced and sold as TAKARADZUKA MINERAL WATER (to become Wilkinson) in Takarazuka.

MITSUYA

MITSUYA is registered as a trademark.

1907

MITSUYA

Adding flavoring and sweetener to Hirano-sui, MITSUYA-Jirushi Hirano Shanpen Cider is launched.

1917

CALPIS®

Daigoso (fermenting skimmed milk with lactic bacteria) is launched. (Daigoso is then developed as CALPIS®.)

1919

CALPIS®

CALPIS® is launched as the first fermented milk drink in Japan made with acidified milk.

1922

CALPIS®

The catchphrase ("hatsukoi no aji®" meaning: "taste of first love") is used for the first time in a newspaper advertisement.

CALPIS®

White dots on a blue background, mimicking the galactic constellation of the Milky Way, is used as a new design for CALPIS®.

1938

Bireley's

The American, Frank Bireley, invents the fruit juice sterilization manufacturing method.

1943

CALPIS®

During the war, CALPIS® is produced with added vitamins for the army due to its nutritional value.

1949

CALPIS®

A special CALPIS® is produced by changing the sweetener to glucose syrup.

Bireley's Orange Japan S.A. is established.

The fruit juice drink, Bireley's ORANGE, is launched.

Zentou MITSUYA Shanpen Cider is launched.

CALPIS®

Design is changed from white dots on a blue background to blue dots on a white background.

Concentrated orange juice CALPIS® is launched.

Bireley's

Asahi's first canned drink (250g), Bireley's, is launched.

CALPIS® Hinamatsuri gifts begins.

The English logo changes to the design centering "CALPIS®".

WILKINSON

WILKINSON GINGER ALE is launched in a green bottle.

Okayama factory (Soja City) starts operations.

MITSUYA

Trademark is changed from MITSUYA Shanpen Cider to MITSUYA.

* Upon ratification of the Madrid Agreement, the use of the name “Shanpen Cider” was discontinued. The product was renamed “MITSUYA” in 1968.
